We would like to share with you our
salt water swimming pool. There are only a few of these around in England and
we are very lucky. It was
dug by hand
by the men of Tollesbury
around 110 years ago.
In Tollesbury we have a thing we call the salt pool. It’s an out side hole that
has been made. Then they have a tunnel that leads from the other side of a
mount. On the other side there are a lot of small rivers called the marshes. The
salt pool is filled up at high tide and then the tunnel is shut to trap the
water in. In the salt pool people have a swim and sometimes they, when the
tide is out, go in the mud and get covered in it then they go in the salt pool
to wash it off. Why they do it we don’t know. But it is fun! It is a cool pool.
But it’s a bit chilly. We also do crabbing. Which is where you attach a bit
bacon to the end of a string. Then the crabs will eat it and you pull it out
then at the end you put them back live and well.

This Tuesday is Shrove
Tuesday (pancake day). It is traditionally a religious festival where you use
all your ingredients to make pancakes and then after wards you fast on simple
food until Easter Friday where you can eat normally again, the period of fasting
is called LENT. Most people just have pancakes (with lemon and sugar) and then
give something up for Lent such as chocolate or bread or something else that
they would miss.
The village has a pancake race where teams of children and adults race up and
down the village hall tossing a pancake. It sounds daft but it is really good
fun. Do you have Shrove Tuesday? Do you like pancakes?
My children love pancakes and sometimes if we are lucky we get to make them at
school."
